As the days grow shorter and the chill of December settles into the air, the historic city of Delft transforms into a luminous winter wonderland. With its canals reflecting twinkling lights, cosy cafés offering warmth and comfort, and the scent of glühwein drifting through the air, it’s time once again for Delft’s most magical season: Delft Verlicht.
The festival kicks off on Tuesday evening, December 9th 2025 with the beloved tradition of Lichtjesavond, promising you a spectacular night of illumination and community spirit. From early evening until around 22:00 hrs, the historic centre will shine with thousands of lights, live music, theatre acts and literal warmth in the form of hot chocolate and glühwein. On the central square, the Markt, the giant Christmas tree will be lit in a magical moment, with surprises at each hour until 21:30 hrs. The Lichtjesmarkt will snake its way through the city’s inner streets, with dozens of traditional stalls: perfect for festive treats, gifts and simply enjoying the season. As if the lights weren’t enough, expect street theatre, snow-like atmospheres along the canals, and special installations in locations such as the Oude Kerk Delft.

The Magic keeps going
Once Lichtjesavond has launched the festival, the city keeps the magic going through to January 4th 2026. During this period you can:
- Wander illuminated routes through the centre and along the canals.
- Visit pop-up exhibitions, light installations and immersive experiences (for example the show ‘Luminiscence’ in the Oude Kerk).
- Go ice-skating, join themed activities, enjoy festive shopping in cosy storefronts, dine in atmospheric cafés or spend the night in one of Delft’s charming hotels to make it a proper getaway.
